LJ → DREAMWIDTH and YOU!!!!!11111

Okay so DW is new to a lot of people. With that in mind, I plurked a link to this info a bit ago, but then I realized I don't necessarily have a lot of people ON my plurk. Also, some people don't...even have plurk, period. Le duh. ORZ Anyways some others found this a bit helpful ;_; I made it as a kind of quicker go-to than going through each FAQ by itself but as a sort of all-purpose bookmarker too, code note(s) and so on.

I know although the Community Based won re the poll (DIRECT POLL-POST LINK FOR POLY REGULAR COMMUNITY VERSUS HYBRID in case you haven't voted yet!, AND as per the mod note: If possible, please use a journal currently associated with POLYchromatic. We're monitoring the poll to make sure that RPers who are not members of POLYchromatic are not voting and skewing the results. DONE 8D !!!!) a lot of us like to pretty up the journals anyway and then post CR Charts, Playlists, Post Tracking, etc.

TL;DR....and we're not even done 8( click the link for maybe more than you ever wanted to know?! :X

stuff for lj dw

starlit - a how-to for LJ layouts on DW using custom layers, compatible to SMOOTH SAILING, FLEXIBLE SQUARES, NEBULA, and MIXIT (EXPRESSIVE) ---TL;DR this lets you use a majority of livejournal layouts - such as those found at MintyApple.Livejournal.com, Velvetb0x.Livejournal.com, etc - more or less.

Examples: [personal profile] ability , [personal profile] aptitude , [personal profile] calculate , [personal profile] dropkick , [community profile] entwine , [community profile] heretics , [community profile] imagery , [personal profile] leadingknight , [personal profile] retain , [personal profile] skylight

Sometimes they need slight tweaking, whether it's the extra coding (first comment below) to remove the 'memories' and 'tags' links in the navigation or pixel adjustment or, well, whatever really. The specifics removal of those links works usually, however, depending on the layout you're using there might be some wonkiness to it. I chose to, when removal of those links on [personal profile] dropkick 's layout made the lowest circle on the navigation indent, use just one line of the code. It's BOTH lines that you usually use because the first takes them out and the second should put the missing link back, but I just left it out because I didn't like what it did to the LOOK of the layout. That's the only time I've had that problem though.

rainfall - a how-to for LJ layout style import for the BLOGGISH theme
tropospherical blue - a stylish addon for FF and Chrome fashioned after the OLD DEFAULT LJ pages for direct entries, profiles, etc (white background, blue highlights etc) You'll need Greasemonkey & Stylish plugins for FF / Tampermonkey re Chrome. ( + fixed code )

(in general)

general FAQ - this is only one of a handful but it's reasonably concise but informative and has a lot of sub-links and direct threads for its references (whether on topic of userpic whatnot or just more coding help, etc, etc)
stepps - another one, longer on the list+link edge of things separated into categories accordingly
legit dw faq for the livejournal shifters (info on errything? idk didn't read it all but markups/tags etc are there, basic jot-down of permissible html etc) ( more - users/communities links specifically! )
[site community profile] dw_news - the updates here are not only informative as a rule of thumb but user-friendly comprehensive and so while i too usually immediately unsubscribe for streamlining of my reading-list, I check it pretty regularly directly and it's worth it.

SHAMELESSLY copied and pasted from the DW news post latest release or so far as I know regarding ACCOUNT creation but really the whole post is useful so you can find it HERE if you've got a moment. Otherwise as follows:

So, invite codes will definitely be off for a little while longer -- this means that anyone can create a Dreamwidth account without needing an invite code for now. Rather than specify an exact time period for how long invite codes will be off, we've decided to just let open account creation run for an unspecified time, as long as this increased demand keeps up and as long as we're happy with the site performance. (And, of course, as long as the [site community profile] dw_antispamteam is able to keep up with the spammers that open account creation inevitably attracts -- all praise be to our dedicated team of spamwhackers!) We'll let you know when we turn invite codes back on.***

***Gonna unsubtly point out that whether for 4th wall days at games or just muses you play on a lark sometimes that creating sooner than later is a good idea just in case. DW is being more than fantastic about the influx and who knows, maybe the no-invite will continue for some time yet! But just in case, you know, :/ pretendy fun times, etc, etc, etc.

Derp that said the links under IN GENERAL lead to a lot of other more lengthy and link-inclusive posts (one or two linked above) but this is just my version, by which I only mean the things I personally found useful. Anything missing's likely somewhere IN those links - people've really jumped on board to clarify/elaborate on stuff, so chances are! Adding to this off and on as I think of it or notice other thingamabobs that are shiny and fall into the category oh-I-can-use-that-*3*.

OF NOTE: THIS is the SAME post except it's the one I'll actually update when I find stuff, if find more stuff. Which IDK I might or might not orz, depends on the updates of DW as well as style adjustments but the link just in case! This copy-paste is for convenience of the community, immediacy, etc, etc, etc.

Ummm end note, re DW being new to people... that includes me T_T so in the end if you've got questions about things I can try to answer them but being as I've only been experimenting through semi masochistic trial and error, I can't promise answers but I will definitely try. If often it's I DON'T KNOW YET ;_; I'm sorry.... dsfd;sk;dks;fds orz

♥ Oh...collections of information. So beautiful ♥

May I add something? Or two things?

Here is a nifty thing:

Because DW began as a clone of LJ with LJ's code, there are certain markup elements that are exactly the same. For instance, all of the old lj user="" and lj-cut text="" markup code still works. This is known as "legacy code" from the early days of DW (so the FAQ tells me). There are also DW-specific versions for these same actions, but, in a pinch, the old LJ codes will sometimes work. I know my hands keep typing them ;; I was so excited when I realized they would still work.

Here is another thing:

Paid accounts on DW are not available via PayPal and I know LJ did accept PayPal. For DW it's sort of cards or nothing. This is kind of a bummer, except that DW did it so they could let us post anything (fuck censorship!). So that's awesome, even if there is a hurdle.

I mention this because I know a lot of people have been arranging "PayPal Proxies" for themselves. That is, send someone with a card your money via PayPal and then the card-holder will "gift" your account thanks to the money you sent. A bit roundabout, but functional. So have no fear if you're PayPal only. Get yourself a proxy! (I mention it specifically because I've served as a PayPal Proxy for someone recently. A bit awkward, but not an impossible arrangement).

Sob, I was glad I could keep going lj user="" ;; MY HANDS DO IT ON THEIR OWN. AUTOMATICALLY.

It really is ;; Now this is what you call a subculture or a movement, man.

I know this stuff is probably repeated up in your links, but they seemed like good things to know.

Your masochistic ways are deeply appreciated! ♥ I could barely make html and css work on LJ after being there for seven years, so coming to DW was kind of ak;lsjiaf. Having all of the information floating around out there in one place is immensely helpful.

Thank you so much!
