Question

‘Ello Poly~ I’m currently in sociology in college and we need to write a few small papers for extra credit points. One of the subjects mentioned were gender stereotypes, such as girls don’t play video games or boys don’t play with dolls, the stereotype of what society views should happen. I’d like to write about RP’ing, I’ve found that generally (at least with RL people I know) RP is thought to be a “guys” thing.

So I need some basis of statistics to go off of, so if you don’t mind can you please leave a comment with your gender?

To be clear this is optional, it’s not a huge deal as I don’t need the extra credit to pass or event get a great grade, you’re lj name will not be mentioned, your online name/real name won’t be, and where I got the info won’t be mentioned. Basically all I need is a number in real life to go off of, the number won’t event be mentioned. I just need to know which side to go with, if it’s completely absurd to think that girls don’t rp (which is what I think XD) or if it’s fairly accurate.

If you’re not comfortable with telling your gender, don’t worry about it! The last thing I want is anyone to feel uncomfortable so don’t feel like you have to!

Thanks for reading~

Another female and my comments on the LJ rp M-F ratio is pretty much what you've already read in everybody else's comments :p

Female, and agreeing with the observations above.

It gets interesting to see what genders males and females tend to play, as well. I've noticed that a lot of female players tend to play more males than females (at least the ones I know personally, as well as myself). Great paper topic!

Female.

And I've been RPing for, wow... almost 30 years now. Tabletop, LARP, online...

Female! I've only really RPed on LJ but I've noticed that males are hugely in the minority. I think that might have something to do with the fact that there are generally just more female LJ users but idk~

Good luck with your paper ♥

Gal, and definitely a video gamer, computer more than console. I'm actually not so much into anime.

Also, the RPG club at my college has about 30 members and a little less than half are female. There's a DM that actually does girl only sessions, but I never could bring myself to play with her because she was a dick.

I've totally mainly seen it as a girls thing, with guys being minority. I think you should definitely take into account what medium of character that people play.

For example. I'm female, I play an anime character from a shoujo slice of life. Although, it has a pretty big following from guys due to its premise of 'otaku watching otaku' and slightly lesbian undertones.

Captain Hammer from Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, which is by Joss Whedon, which means there's a considerable number of girls that like it, and at the same time, it's accessible to guys, but NEIL PATRICK HARRIS who, in my opinion, brings all the girls to the yard, if you get my drift. And yet his having been in Harold and Kumar might have some effect on that. Plus I think that Nathan Fillion's (actor for CH) show Serenity and Firefly might be more guys shows. IDEK.

Oh. And Demyx from Kingdom Hearts, which is a video game. And video games are inherently more for guys, but it's got a Disney/Final Fantasy thing going on, and FF is definitely still geared towards guys, but the Disney lessens that a little. Plus, the amount of girls versus guys in the KH fandom is overwhelming. Although, it's highly popular for males in general.

Actually. That'd be something, huh? Girls are more fandom-based (art, stories, rping, etc.) than guys. Maybe that's a point. Definitely a lot of pairings from girls. But guys tend to just do. IE, just play the game, just watch the show, just read the book.

OMG, HI, THIS IS SO TL;DR HOW DID THIS HAPPEN. Hi, I am a girl.

Add another chick to the overwhelming chorus. I'm also a comic geek and a (kind of sucky) gamer. And in my admittedly small experience, lj RPs tend to be largely female; I think Poly is the first game where there have been guys in my sphere of playage. (Then again, my experience before Poly was mostly very very small RPs.)

I'm female. And I"m from Europe (I"m telling in case that messes up with your statistics somehow...)

Female~<3

I actually saw a more fair ratio of guys to girls in "text" based RPG's (aka on proboards or invisionfree and the ilk) though when I came to LJ, females dominate.

I'm female. And very proud to be female, too! Though each time I do a test to see if my brain is male or female, I always score around 80% male and 20% female. (I love rules and the colour brown, I can't multi-task and hate shopping for shoes, I think most people are prettier without make-up, I STRONGLY LOATHE CHICK-FLICKS AND CHICK-LIT!!!, I love sci-fi, etc. etc.) Currently, I tend to play more male characters, while I actually only played female characters when I started out with RP.

I'm actually an alligator :E

No, I'm just kidding, I'm a LADY. I would offer something more substantial to go along with it, but I should be in bed five hours ago.

I'm female! \o/

I think it depends on the kind of RP, really. Like, turn-based RP's and the like that deal more with action and building HP and gaining armor and weaponry seem to be dominated by more males, while RP that builds more on relationships is more populated by females? However, that's not black and white, as I still participate in the first mentioned kind of RP. XD

Just my two cents! :3

Good luck with the paper!

Another female here!

On a side note, I play a lot of video games and read a lot of comics. I did used to be a tabletop turn-based rp'er but I've not really done that since I left school.

I'm a girl and I like using my MANRY icons to leave totally ♥-y comments on [livejournal.com profile] poly_tldr. SUCH CONTRAST

This is my first RP but I've written fan-fic for a while, and in my experience guys play more pc/console/table games while yeah, girls go for more of the narrative. Half my friends geek about manga/anime/games all the time while the other half pretend like they're not into all of the above at all NO REALLY because they're uncomfortable with the gamer stereotype. Maybe exposure to certain types of games play a role in that process, as well as how secure a person is with their self-image...

But that's cool! I'm a psych major myself. Hope your paper goes well!

I'm a female, this sounds like an interesting topic. I'd love to know what you come up with.
