Back in the day, some immensely helpful and motivated players created for us a
Map of the City. And it was very good.
Actually, it's still good. I know I refer to it. I think a lot of players do (don't you?). But, as you can see, it's gotten a little out of date. Things have come and gone, and now the City's island has grown after the battlefields have been washed of blood (the poppies grow between the crosses, row on row...). Oh yeah, and it sprouted a mountain too! ... It's probably worthwhile to update this map.
So we are here to update the map.If your character is running some sort of in-game operation (a business, a dojo, a church, a rodeo, a strip club, a pet store, a soup kitchen, whatever) and it doesn't appear on this map and you would like it to appear on this map, please drop a line here.
A Few Salient Points1.
None of the City's "set pieces" are moving in this update. So that means the 12 apartment buildings, the Cathedral, Xanadu, the Opera Abandoned, the hospital, the Deity Offices, the Carousel, the Fountain, and anything else that's part of the game but not player-run are all staying where they are on this map. Likewise, existing player-run places are not moving unless the players say they'd like them to move.
2.
This map is for fun. Many players prefer to handwave giving directions, which is perfectly fine. Other players like being able to say "It's over there, near Building Four" (or whathaveyou), which is okay too. This map is just a bit of world-building for those who are curious about what the City looks like (at least from the air).
3.
If your character is running an in-game operation and you'd rather not pin it down on the map, that's fine too. Please make sure we modly-types know about it and have listed it in our
Destinations list so other players will know about it. But you don't have to put it down on the map if you'd rather not or don't know where you'd like it to go. (N.B.: We're starting up a new Destinations and Locations community soon, so watch for more information on that soon!)
4.
This map doesn't show everything and is not to scale. I'm not a cartographer. My brother is a geographer but I didn't get the map gene. I get lost in places I know. (This is all true.) But, most of all? This map is soooo not to scale.
5.
Likewise, remember that there are NPC businesses all over. They aren't necessarily shown on the map, but remember that the City is a city. There are NPC shops, NPC buildings, NPC goings-on in the street. Maybe these NPCs are the children of people who were brought to the City long ago. Maybe they're from more mundane times and places (like my own, sigh). But, whatever the case, to invoke the 80s, don't, don't, don't, don't...don't~ you forget about NPCs. At least as far as the map and City appearance goes.
Some Brief Cartographic Thoughts on This Map(Just for edification and lols)
Back in the Middle Ages, there were a lot of maps being drawn called "T-O" maps. (They're kind of cool--give 'em a Google.) The idea behind the T-O maps was to show how the world fit together, even if it wasn't to scale or accurate at all. (And then they go into religious explanations about which of Noah's sons peopled which parts of the world...but that's a digression.) It explained how the world worked in the mindset of the people who drew them and had them drawn. "Up" isn't North on these maps, for example, but East. Think about that. It changes everything around.
That's kind of what this map is: it's not to scale, it's not perfect, but it shows how the City kind of fits together and works. This building is near that one which is near the other one. It's just a way of thinking about the game in terms of how it all looks and moves together. It's world-building, which can be a lot of fun.So drop us a line if you know of a place that should be included or a place that's disappeared. Maybe this older map can even remind you of a place you'd forgotten but always wanted to do something with.
